Bull Valley Roadhouse is a true gem in the ruff. The ruff is the windy road into Port Costa! Be very cautious. Once in the charming century old building. We were seated at a table in the garden, enjoyable perfect for brunch. My husband had Chilaquiles and enjoyed every forkful. I had Fried Chicken and oh my outstanding delicious. I think the best I've ever had. Be sure to check out the bar menu and order a unique cocktail. Definitely an out of the way destination but 100 percent worth it.

Went on a mini adventure by visiting Port Costa after hearing there are establishments that are a must try. The vibe and ambiance is very eclectic in time period but refreshing to be in compared to current urban establishments. Parker provided excellent service and kept the libations coming. Menu may seem small but felt like a lot of good choices for various taste buds. Must try: Plum Poke, fried chicken wings - need a bucket of the sauce to take home, caramel panna cotta

Best little hidden gem in Port Costa. Old charm with a twist. The food, service, vibe all 5/5. A great date night, special occasion spot. It's really not crowded or busy. Just the right amount of everything. The food is delicious. The drinks are phenomenal. I'd give it some fake bad stars just to keep it a best kept secret. But I love this place and definitely worth checking out!

Came here for dinner because it was a spot I've always been so curious about. Before I talk about my experience, I want to tell you about my fascination with this area. It's so backroad country but a gem. It's one of those places that only a handful of people know about but if they do, it's not crowded, which I love and appreciate. It's got that small town charm and the first time I came around Port Costa, I was not tryna get out of my car because it looks like that small town- the kind of town that people who look like me, don't peruse, if you get what I mean! Still, it's in the Bay Area. Now back to the restaurant, walking in, there's so much to see. Everything is old and old-timey. I like it. There's old pictures of white men back in the 1800s and it feels like I walked into a fancy saloon. The food was delicious. We ordered fried smelt with aioli, pigs ears and the gentleman's toast. The fried smelt was yummy with the aioli. The pigs ears came with a sweet chili sauce but it was too chewy for my taste. The gentleman's toast was a favorite as all the flavors came together so beautifully! Nothing special but it was yummy! My entree was the smoked pork chop with cheesy grits and collard greens. First off- the plating was too pretty and picture perfect. I took my initial bite of the pork chop and I closed my eyes in ecstasy... I ate it so slowly to savor everything about it. It had the perfect ratio of fat to meat, of chewiness and tenderness, definitely not dry, and hellllla moist. Thinking about it makes my mouth water... This place is A+ with its ambience, food and customer service. Definitely coming back!

Nina, the kids and I celebrated my 80th birthday here today. Nina and I arrived first. Unsurprisingly, we found street parking across the street . We have incredible parking karma and always find parking spots together. This was the best. We crossed the street and went in, introduced ourselves to the woman at the front desk and she took us to our table. Rather than inside, as it was when Alan and I were here, it was outside in a lovely covered patio. We were given menus and soon Tammy and Kevin arrived. Our server was Skyler. Nina and I had iced tea and Tammy and Kevin had water. Their sweetener is Stevia, which I love and Tammy hates. Nina and I ordered fried chicken, dark meat for me, white meat for her. The fried chicken came w/ corn bread, coleslaw (no mayo, Tammy observed approvingly) and pickled cauliflower florets. Nina and I ordered the chicken liver mousse to share. Kevin ordered a hamburger and fries. Tammy ordered a cinnamon roll for the table as well as miso baked carrots to share, mac and cheese to share and a mushroom omelet. The iced tea was delicious. So was the chicken liver mousse. Nina and I each had a quarter of the serving. The fried chicken was good, but not as good as I remember. The thighs were boneless. I loved the cauliflower and the cornbread. The coleslaw was OK. The carrots were fabulous! Tammy was ecstatic over the cinnamon roll, which WAS very good, judging by the bites Nina and I had. Neither Tammy nor Kevin was impressed w/ the mac and cheese, but Tam makes some of the best ever. I didn't have a taste and Nina doesn't like mac and cheese. Avi boxed up our leftovers to go, checking w/ the kitchen to make sure the chicken liver mousse was safe after sitting out for an hour, Nina's concern. We were brought dessert menus by a lovely man w/ a luxuriant ginger beard and a man bun. I didn't ask his name but Tammy volunteered that it was my 80th birthday, so he brought me a lemon bar (my choice) decorated w/ blueberries and a candle, on the house. He admired the irises on my shirt, which Tam gave to me a few years ago. Service from everyone was exceptional. I finished the lemon bar, although I didn't expect to. No dinner for me. Just ice water. When it was time to open my presents, Nina gave me a dish towel w/ collective nouns on it, like a Parliament of Owls, a Murder of Crows, etc, along w/ a book of cartoons I remember fondly from the Chronicle years ago, All Over Coffee. I loved them both! Tammy had commissioned another piece from Wire by Ryan, a banyan tree to commemorate the times Alan and I had spent in Hawaii. She and Kevin presented it to me and it will have a place of honor in the house. It was wonderfully fitting because I just read an article yesterday about Maui rebuilding after the fire and it mentioned that the banyan tree in Lahaina is recovering very well.

We went for a late dinner, ended up being later than anticipated. Got drinks at the bar & an appetizer, while waiting to be seated. The bar keep was very gracious; hubby tried one of their signature drinks, well made, along with my mojito. We did get seated sooner than anticipated; the mains were the gnocchi in pesto with peas & asparagus, followed by an order of the halibut. Both were well prepared & good flavor. The mains were slow to come out, yet worth the wait. The service was stellar! The ambiance is casual & easy going. My only gripe - they ran out of bread, several of the appetizers & NO ICE CREAM! You couldn't have the chocolate cookie with a scoop of vanilla ice cream I guess we'll have to return & hopefully next time we can have dessert!

Omg, what an amazing and super unique dining experience! If you haven't been to Port Costa in the East Bay and are game for a little off the traditional radar adventure, Bull Valley Roadhouse is such a fun alternative to anything but the ordinary. We chose to sit outdoors because the weather was so beautiful, highly recommend! There's a beautiful cocktail/mocktail/beer/wine menu, and they also do special Sunday drinks & brunch from 11a-3p. As for the dinner menu, our party chose to really go all out in honor of a few celebrations we had! We started with the deviled eggs, beef croquettes, fresh bread and honey butter, the Gentleman's relish toast, mac & cheese, and for the grand finale...we chose the largest beef shank I've ever seen served with broccolini and risotto. Everything was shared, and the shank was a $160 plate but split between our whole group, it was not only of epic proportions and extremely photo worthy, but was incredibly fresh, flavorful, and fun. Finishing with a chocolate caramel cookie, scoop of homemade vanilla ice cream, and topped with chocolate whipped cream (so yum!), I literally was in pure culinary heaven. From the XO chili sauce on the deviled eggs (I asked for an extra side of this sauce to use for the rest of the meal), the crispiness of the croquettes and tenderness of the meat inside, the perfect runny egg atop the Gentlemen's toast, the most deliciously sweet honey butter, to the fall off the bone shank, perfectly salted risotto, broccolini crunch, and of course the creamy Mac n cheese (let it sit for a few minutes to harden)...honestly everything was so divine! From the attentive & friendly service to historical funky ambiance, this is just a spot you have to experience for yourself..can't wait to come back to try brunch on a beautiful day! Def worth the extra splurge for a bit of the weekend spontaneous urge..

I have been here a few times and I am always blown away with their menu options and variety they offer. The menu has been different every time because they use seasonal/fresh ingredients to make very unique plates and drinks. This most recent visit there were 8 of us going for brunch on a Sunday. We ended up calling for a reservation the night before and got lucky with a table. Restaurant: the decor is very unique and vintage. There are old pictures on the walls and everything is Victorian era. It's a smaller restaurant so I recommend reservations, especially on the weekend. Food: where to start? We ordered so much and were happy with every item we got! We started with a special hamachi fish collar, pig ears, deviled eggs, and beef heart. My favorites were the pig ears and fish collar. I had never had pig ears before and they were fried to perfection with a great sauce. I'm not usually a fan of deviled eggs, but these were creamy with a bacon jam! For my entree I ordered the shrimp and grits. The shrimp were tender and the grits with the sauce had great flavor. I've honestly never been disappointed from the food here and wish I could try everything on the menu!! Drinks: I got a "Spanish g&t" which was specifically recommended by the server. BEST gin and tonic I have had in a very long time! It was a perfect balance of botanicals and sweetness. 10/10 will always recommend going here. The town of port costa is very quaint and there are some local shops to check out right next to the restaurant! Plenty of parking in a lot right next door.

Absolutely great!! Loved the atmosphere! Old timey but comfy. Service was awsome from. The waiters, cocktail severest to water and bus services. The food was eclectic but awsome!! My beef tongue cheese steak was fantastic! The fried chicken totally solid. My daughter said it was her new favorite burger. Try the pig ears!! Loved it and will be back!
